reversed their pledge to take up in emergency aid bill this week for states devastated by superstorm sandy. the move potentially leaves the $60 billion aid package to die at the end of the legislative session on thursday. the house was expected to consider the bill today, but dropped it following lengthy talks on the fiscal cliff. the decision drew harsh condemnation from both sides of the aisle. republican congressmember michael grimm of staten island, one of the areas hardest hit by city, said -- democratic congressmember jerry nadler of new york city blasted his colleagues for failing to take urgent action. >> hurricane sandy struck on october 29. nine weeks ago. it is unprecedented that it takes so long. i can understand -- i would not sympathize -- but i can understand with members to my said the amount requested is too much, we should change it, debate it. fine. but to ignore it? to ignore the plight of millions of american citizens? unprecedented, disgusting, unworthy of the leadership of this house. they should reconsider or hang their heads in shame, mr. speaker. >> president obam

for failing to call a vote on aid for victims of superstorm sandy, and his words have already prompted action. brian schactman has the latest details for us. >> you know, when chris christie talks, turns out, washington listens. last night when all was said and done on the fiscal cliff, the house adjourned without addressing relief money for superstorm sandy. this absolutely enraged pligtss in the northeast, especially that man peter king from new york and others from new jersey, areas still dealing with the storm that destroyed whole communities in late october. you may recall governor christie stood with president obama after the disaster, and some thought that was a political move. withholding the aid was perhaps another political move but either way christie didn't hesitate to point a finger earlier today. >> there's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims. the house majority and their speaker, john boehner. >> reporter: but 90 minutes later new york representative said two votes for funding are forthcoming, one on friday for 9 billion in flood insura

officials that hit the ground when superstorm sandy hit explained that if you didn't get money into the hands of these small businesses almost immediately, then most likely they would go under. if you don't start rebuilding right away, people start to become depressed and they lose hope. let's not even discuss the economic impact. so to delay this vote even for another day is something that will resonate not only with the people that have been affected and are suffering and have lost everything, but i think it will resonate with the american people for a long time, and i think it will make them wonder what we are here for and what is the role of the federal government, what is the role of the congress, and maybe most importantly, can they trust us? so it is with a heartfelt apology that i apologize to my constituents, to my fellow new yorkers in need, those in new jersey, connecticut, and pennsylvania. i did all that i could. i will not stop, i will not relent, and i will continue to push for this vote to come as quickly as possible, but there is no rhyme or reason and it is in

since we had superstorm sandy and nothing has passed. two months. who among us would be content with the counsels of patience and delay if, in fact, we were shivering in the cold, if, in fact, our families had no home, if, in fact, they had been displaced from their schools, if, in fact, their businesses that they worked a lifetime took out debt and now are closed mare never open. who among us would happy with the counsels of patience and delay? so we cannot have a set of circumstances that creates a series of delays. now, i'm all for the good-government amendments of saying to those who are in debt to the nation that they, in fact, cannot receive any benefits or those who are deceased, of course they should not receive any benefits. but the rest of this is about creating delay after delay after delay that is only in the midst of a biting winter. we just had the first northeaster yesterday. we cannot ultimately accept those types of changes that put us in a process in which, in fact, we will not be able to successfully move the elements of being able to recover. now, the -- this

extra funding for superstorm sandy. they deal with working on the wireless surveillance from the bush era, reauthorizing that. the senate floor is active with a the lot of other things they have to get done. the house will come back on sunday and be in session on sunday. they were told to be prepared to go through january 2nd when their term ends. there are a lot of members who aren't coming back in january. there will be that transition. when you walk around here, mike, you have boxes in hallways, office chairs in the hallway. people are moving, so there are members who don't have an office anymore but here to vote to wait on whatever might happen. it's a time of transition. we were looking back. for a lame duck to be back between christmas and new year's, it hasn't happened since nixon was in office. sometimes they come back when it's not an end of term year, but that's a long time. it gives you an idea how unusual it is to spend the holidays right here at capitol hill. >> kelly o'donnell, thanks as always. we appreciate it. >> you bet. >> it's the chairs in the hallway of the depar
